Before selecting a garage cabinetry partner for a San Jose property, ask each candidate to respond to the same site information. A proposal based on an empty rectangular room is difficult to compare with one that accounts for the equipment, vehicles and existing finishes actually there. This guide focuses on site scope and proposal comparison rather than manufacturing samples.

Give bidders the same garage brief

Provide photographs of every proposed storage wall, an available plan and a list of items to store. Show garage doors and their operating equipment, utilities, outlets and other fixed features. Mark preliminary measurements as preliminary. Explain which existing storage will remain and which is expected to be removed.

Describe how the garage will be used during the work. If it must continue supporting household access or storage, ask how the proposed sequence addresses that requirement. Do not present a desired arrangement as an already-verified construction condition.

Ask who resolves the conflicts

Have each candidate identify the party responsible for final measurement and coordination with the designer or contractor. Equipment access, electrical work and other regulated conditions need review by the appropriate professionals. A cabinet maker's drawing should not be treated as blanket approval to relocate or enclose equipment.

For architects and interior designers, compare how the proposal records unresolved interfaces. The useful answer identifies the decision, responsible party and point at which it must be resolved.

Normalize the scope before comparing totals

Create one comparison list covering cabinetry, work surfaces, hardware, finishing, drawings, field verification, delivery and unloading. Add existing-storage removal, wall preparation and installation as separate lines. Mark each response included, excluded or awaiting clarification.

Work requiring a contractor's license is performed by appropriately licensed independent contractors under a separate agreement. Confirm the actual installing party and its scope rather than assuming that every service shown in a marketing description is part of one contract.

Evaluate logistics and follow-through

Ask where material will be received and protected, who checks it on arrival and how damage or missing components are recorded. Request a clear contact for manufacturing questions and a separate explanation of installation responsibilities where applicable. Compare the process for resolving outstanding items as well as the promised delivery date.

Before acceptance, require a revised proposal that incorporates the agreed clarifications. Keep it with the same drawing revision used for pricing. This avoids selecting a low total whose apparent advantage disappears when omitted work is added.
