Garage Cabinetry in Los Gatos: Layout and Build Planning
Plan garage cabinetry around parking, storage loads, utilities and installation. A practical checklist for Los Gatos new builds and remodels.

Send drawings for a proposalView completed Berkeley workA garage cabinet layout should be checked with the vehicles parked and the storage items measured. For a Los Gatos new build or remodel, use the steps below to prepare a cabinet brief before deciding how much of each wall to cover. Millwork USA is based in Morgan Hill and provides custom garage cabinetry; this guide describes planning decisions, not a completed Los Gatos project.
Start with the parking envelope
Record the vehicle length and width, then check the space needed to open doors, access the trunk and walk between the car and cabinets. Repeat the check with a cabinet door or drawer open. A layout that fits on a floor plan may still be awkward when someone is unloading groceries or reaching a tool drawer.
Mark the proposed cabinet fronts on the floor with removable tape. Test a shallow storage run against a deeper workbench rather than assuming every assembly should have the same depth. Note which vehicle is normally parked on each side and whether a future vehicle could change the layout.
Turn stored objects into cabinet dimensions
Separate items used daily from seasonal equipment, bulky bins and long objects. Measure the actual bins, folded chairs, sports bags and tools that need to fit. Give each category a proposed location before deciding on the number of doors.
For adjustable shelves, specify the intended contents and expected loads so the fabricator can select suitable shelf spans, supports and cabinet construction. Heavy tools need a different drawer and support specification from light household storage. Ask for the proposed hardware ratings and limits in the submittal; appearance alone does not establish load capacity.
Map equipment and service access
Photograph each wall and identify receptacles, electrical panels, plumbing, mechanical equipment, charging equipment, garage-door tracks and the opener. Show door swings and access routes on the same drawing as the cabinetry.
Do not cover service equipment with a cabinet simply because it makes the elevation look cleaner. Required access, ventilation and working clearances must be confirmed by the relevant trade and design team. Charging cable routes should be considered together with parking and storage so a cable does not cross a frequently used drawer or walking route. This guide does not establish code clearances or replace project-specific review.
Decide what must happen before walls close
In new construction, agree on the cabinet arrangement early enough to coordinate backing, power and lighting. Identify which details can be established from drawings and which depend on the finished wall and floor. A preliminary cabinet plan is useful for coordination, but should not be treated as permission to fabricate from unverified dimensions.
For a remodel, record existing conditions before removing cabinets. Check whether demolition or changes to flooring will alter the usable opening. If a wall condition is uncertain, keep it as an open item rather than concealing it behind a nominal cabinet dimension. Wall-mounted assemblies require a mounting design appropriate to the substrate and intended load.
Compare material specifications, not just colors
A proposal should identify the cabinet-box material, door and drawer-front material, exposed edges, interior finish, back construction and worktop. Compare these separately: two white cabinet packages may have different construction and service characteristics.
Ask how edges and joints will be protected during normal cleaning and what exposure the selected material can tolerate. A garage with occasional damp conditions needs a different discussion from a dry interior storage room. Water-resistant claims should be checked against the actual product specification; cabinetry should not be used to hide an unresolved leak.
Approve a physical finish sample where appearance matters. For wood or veneer, discuss grain direction and acceptable variation. For a workbench, describe the intended tasks and whether the surface is expected to tolerate tools, abrasion or spills.
Make quotes comparable
List the cabinet runs, drawers, shelves, tall compartments, worktop and accessories. Identify whether removal of existing storage, wall preparation, electrical work, delivery and installation are included or handled by others. Separate confirmed selections from allowances and optional upgrades.
Ask who measures the site, prepares shop drawings, approves finishes and handles installation adjustments. For a contractor-led job, assign one person to coordinate revised drawings and trade questions. Compare scope and responsibility alongside price; an omitted worktop or installation allowance can make apparently similar quotes difficult to compare.
Release and installation checklist
Before fabrication, confirm the drawing revision, field dimensions, finish approval, selected hardware and any unresolved equipment interfaces. Obtain a project-specific schedule after those decisions and material availability are known. A production duration quoted for another room or another project is not a reliable garage installation date.
Before delivery, arrange vehicle removal, access, staging and protection. Clarify when floor finishing and other nearby work will be complete. At handover, check door and drawer operation, visible finish condition, hardware, shelf supports and service access. Record remaining adjustments and obtain care instructions for the selected materials.
Send a useful project brief
Include the project city, new-build or remodel status, wall photographs, approximate dimensions, vehicles, storage priorities and available drawings. State the desired installation window and which trades are already involved. Early measurements help scope the discussion; final fabrication dimensions still require confirmation.
