A useful kitchen planning brief is a decision document, not a collection of inspiration photographs. For a Morgan Hill project, begin with how the kitchen must work, which existing conditions constrain the layout and what information the design team still needs. The result should let an estimator understand the proposed assemblies without guessing what is included.

Start with the activities and storage

Describe who uses the kitchen and what needs a permanent place: everyday dishes, small appliances, pantry items, serving pieces, waste and recycling. Identify items that are unusually tall, heavy or frequently used. Mark where food preparation, cooking, cleaning and serving take place. This gives the designer a basis for choosing drawer arrangements and cabinet interiors before decorative details dominate the discussion.

Do not specify a pull-out or organizer from a photograph alone. Ask the designer to check its required internal space, operating movement and compatibility with the proposed cabinet construction.

Separate a survey from a fabrication measurement

An early plan can show approximate room dimensions, windows, doors and existing service locations. Label these as preliminary when they have not been field verified. Photograph corners, soffits, floor transitions and equipment that affect the design. The party responsible for final measurement should later confirm the relevant finished conditions against the approved drawing revision.

If walls, flooring or services will change, record those changes on the brief. A measurement taken before that work is complete is not automatically a dimension that can be used for fabrication.

Build an appliance decision register

List each proposed appliance by manufacturer and model, with its current installation information. Mark undecided appliances as open items. Panel-ready appliances, ventilation, refrigerator access and service clearances need coordination; nominal appliance width alone is not a complete cabinet specification. Assign someone to resolve each open item before the affected assembly is released.

Make approval responsibilities explicit

Record who approves the layout, cabinet elevations, finish samples, hardware and price changes. Give the project a shared list of current documents. A brief entry can read: island end panel; appearance awaiting owner approval; drawing revision identified; fabrication held for that item. This is more useful than a general statement that selections are almost complete.

What to send for the first review

Send the project location, current plan, photographs, appliance register, storage priorities and desired timing. State whether this is a remodel or new construction and identify the designer and contractor, if appointed. Millwork USA is based in Morgan Hill; the project still needs an individual review of scope, manufacturing and delivery requirements.
