Coordinate custom wall paneling with door openings, reveals, veneer layout, lighting and service access before approving fabrication drawings.

A wall-panel elevation should explain how the entire surface works, including doors, corners, service openings and adjacent finishes. For a Los Angeles interior, coordinate those decisions before dividing the wall into panels for fabrication. Millwork USA manufactures in Morgan Hill, California, and reviews Los Angeles scopes with the project design and construction team.

Establish the controlling lines

Identify the finished floor reference, ceiling line, door heads and any horizontal bands that control the composition. Decide which alignments take priority when the existing architecture is irregular. A panel joint that works on one elevation may collide with a door casing or return around a corner.

Show the proposed joint layout on complete wall elevations. Include the wall ends and adjoining surfaces rather than reviewing isolated rectangles. Where the composition wraps a corner, add a return view so that both the designer and fabricator can see how the pattern continues.

Draw the door as part of the wall

For a concealed or visually integrated door, identify the actual door and frame system, opening direction, hardware and required clearances. Show the relationship between the surrounding panel faces and the door face in section. A continuous grain pattern is a design intention, not a substitute for an operable door detail.

Confirm who supplies the door, frame, hardware and surrounding panels. Coordinate any performance requirements with the project architect and the selected system supplier. Do not infer a fire rating or other tested performance from the appearance of a flush door.

Make the veneer layout reviewable

Record species, grain direction and the intended relationship between adjacent panels. If visual continuity is important, review a panel map and appropriate material samples. A small finish sample can communicate color and sheen but cannot show the full composition of a large wall.

Agree how doors, removable panels and replacement parts fit into the sequence. Identify which surfaces receive veneer and how exposed edges are treated. Record the accepted sample and drawing revision together so that production does not rely on an untracked inspiration image.

Locate service openings before release

Place outlets, switches, controls, grilles and access panels on the elevation using the information approved by the relevant trades. Show opening dimensions, faceplate size and the relationship to joints. A device centered on the original drywall layout may no longer look centered after the wall is divided into panels.

For removable access, define what must remain reachable and how the panel will be removed. Review its weight, handling and fixing method with the responsible fabricator and installer. Keep access instructions in the project record instead of leaving future maintenance dependent on the original installation crew.

Coordinate lighting through a section

A line on an elevation does not establish space for a lighting profile, wiring or serviceable components. Review the proposed lighting assembly with the lighting and electrical team. Show the visible light opening and its relationship to the panel edge.

Review the finish sample under the intended lighting where practical. Light directed along a surface can make joints and texture more noticeable. Agree on the intended appearance before approving a detail based only on a front-facing rendering.

Separate design approval from site confirmation

The designer should approve composition and finish intent; the party responsible for measurement should confirm the site dimensions and relevant conditions. Mark unresolved items explicitly. Do not release a panel containing an unconfirmed service opening merely because the overall elevation has been accepted.

Use a single current drawing set with dated revisions and a list of outstanding decisions. The measurement guide at millwork-usa.com/resources/wall-systems-and-paneling-in-los-angeles-field-measurement-and-verification explains what to record before release.

Send a coordinated review package

Provide elevations, relevant sections, door and hardware information, service locations, material references and the project address. The process overview at millwork-usa.com/process explains the broader approval stages. Submit the package at millwork-usa.com/request-project-review.

Installation services requiring a contractor's license are performed under separate agreement by appropriately licensed independent contractors. The proposal should identify responsibility for substrate preparation, delivery, installation and adjacent-trade work.
