Wall Paneling Field Measurements: A Los Angeles Project Checklist

Record wall dimensions, finished datums, corners, openings and service locations for custom paneling, with clear responsibility for final verification.

A wall-panel survey must describe the conditions used to make the panels, not just the overall width and height of a room. For a Los Angeles project, give the designer, manufacturer and installer a shared record of the finished surfaces, openings and unresolved site work. This checklist helps organize that record; it does not replace the responsible team's field verification.

Name each wall and establish a reference

Assign a wall identifier that matches the plan and elevations. Identify its start point and the direction in which measurements run. Mark the finished floor reference and the proposed finished panel face so that separate measurements can be related to the same geometry.

Record whether each measurement refers to existing drywall, prepared substrate or a proposed finished surface. If floor or ceiling work remains, identify the expected change and who will confirm it. Mixing dimensions taken from different finish stages can produce a drawing that cannot be reconciled on site.

Record variation instead of averaging it away

Measure relevant widths and heights at more than one location as appropriate to the assembly. Record changes in level, alignment or wall plane that affect the proposed layout. Note corners and returns, including conditions that may require a separate detail.

Keep the actual observations visible. Do not replace an irregular condition with a neat average without an agreed design response. The designer, fabricator and installer should decide where adjustments will occur and how they will appear in joints, edges or transitions.

Locate openings from consistent datums

Record doors, windows, recesses and service openings from the same references used for the wall. Identify frame and trim dimensions that affect the panel face. Include the depth and return conditions, not just the opening shown in a frontal photograph.

For doors, record the selected system information separately from the measured opening. Coordinate panel depth, swing and hardware with that system. An opening measurement alone does not establish the construction or clearance of an integrated door.

Capture device locations and access requirements

Show outlets, switches, controls and grilles on a marked elevation. Identify which positions are confirmed and which are proposed. Obtain the relevant device or faceplate information from the responsible trade before finalizing a cutout.

Record access that must remain available behind the finish. State the required opening and the direction in which a removable panel can be handled. If that information is unresolved, mark the affected part as on hold rather than allowing a preliminary sketch to become a fabrication instruction.

Connect photographs to dimensions

Take an overall photograph of each wall and detail photographs of corners, transitions and unusual conditions. Label them with the wall identifier and date. A photograph should help someone interpret the measured record; perspective makes it unsuitable as the sole source of fabrication dimensions.

Keep marked drawings, survey notes and photographs together. If a later site visit changes a dimension, identify the revision and the affected panel numbers. Do not leave the original survey circulating as if it remains current.

Agree on responsibility and release status

Identify who took the measurements, who checked the information and who can authorize fabrication. Separate confirmation of site conditions from the designer's approval of appearance. List assumptions, inaccessible areas and work that must be completed before a final check.

Millwork USA manufactures in Morgan Hill and coordinates Los Angeles project information before production. The scope should state how field measurement, substrate preparation and installation are assigned. Installation services requiring a contractor's license are performed under separate agreement by appropriately licensed independent contractors.

Send the survey with the design package

Provide the wall register, dimensioned elevations, photographs, finish-stage notes and unresolved-item list. Include the intended panel layout so that the review can identify which site conditions control fabrication.
