Replacing millwork in an existing Morgan Hill home begins with deciding what will remain. New cabinetry may need to meet an older floor, uneven wall, existing stone or a finish that is no longer available. Record those constraints before treating a new elevation as a complete fabrication instruction.

Mark what stays and what is removed

Photograph each affected wall and label the cabinets, trim, flooring, countertops and services that will remain. Identify surfaces that the contractor can protect and items that may be damaged during removal. An existing cabinet can conceal unfinished flooring or wall conditions that are not visible during the first visit.

Create a separate list of unknown conditions. If demolition is needed to confirm a dimension or service location, agree who will inspect it and when. Keep affected fabrication on hold until the required information is available rather than assuming the concealed construction matches the visible face.

Decide whether to match or deliberately contrast

A new veneer, painted surface or door profile may not match an aged installation exactly. Review a proposed sample next to the retained material under the room's lighting. Discuss grain, sheen, texture and edge details separately from the general color.

Where an exact match is uncertain, consider a deliberate transition: a complete wall composition, a different material on a new island or a defined break between old and new work. The decision should be visible in the drawings and sample approval, rather than left to interpretation after delivery.

Check appliance and plumbing changes early

A new appliance model can change the opening, ventilation and panel requirements even when its advertised size appears similar. Supply the selected model information and identify any existing appliances that will be reused. Coordinate connections and required clearances with the relevant trades.

For a vanity or kitchen sink cabinet, establish whether plumbing stays in its current position. Moving a service is separate from designing a cabinet around it. Confirm access for maintenance and identify who is responsible for any associated site work.

Measure against the agreed finished condition

Record whether dimensions refer to the existing surfaces or to the surfaces expected after remodeling. New flooring, wall tile or ceiling work can change the space available for the millwork. Identify the point at which the contractor can confirm finished openings.

For an irregular wall or floor, the design team and fabricator should review how fillers, scribes and visible joints will accommodate the actual condition. Do not assume that a rectangular drawing means the room is square. Resolve the intended appearance and the measurement responsibility before release.

Plan the household disruption

If the home remains occupied, agree which rooms will be unavailable and how people will move safely around the work. Discuss protection of retained finishes, temporary storage, delivery access and the sequence for removing the old installation. Keep these responsibilities in the contractor's site plan.

Avoid removing essential storage or a working kitchen solely because a preliminary fabrication date has been discussed. Coordinate demolition with confirmed dependencies, deliveries and the installation agreement. Storage, protection and handling responsibilities should remain clear if the site cannot receive completed work.

Prepare the handoff and completion list

At handoff, review the agreed scope room by room. Record remaining adjustments, missing components and responsibility for each item. Keep finish references, hardware information and care instructions with the project records. A marked list is easier to resolve than an informal collection of messages.
