Built-in home office cabinetry for San Francisco and Bay Area homes.

A home office is used for hours at a time, so small decisions add up: where the cables go, whether the printer has air, how the shelves carry books, and what the camera sees behind you. Millwork USA designs built-in office, study and library cabinetry for San Francisco and Bay Area homes, manufactured in Morgan Hill. Below is how we approach the work.

Start with the work

Design the desk around the way you work.

Office built-ins are often specified by style first and use second. We reverse that order. The desk height, depth and the storage beside it should follow the person, the chair and the equipment, and the shelving should follow what will actually live on it.

  • Screens: how many, their size, and whether they sit on stands, arms or the wall. Monitor arms clamp to the work surface and need a top that can take the clamp.
  • Computer and peripherals: a tower, a laptop dock, a printer or scanner, external drives and a router, each with its own power and ventilation needs.
  • Paper: files that need a drawer with suspension rails, and reference material that can live on open shelves.
  • Calls and video: the wall behind your chair is what other people see, which is a reason to treat it as a composed elevation.
  • More than one user: a shared office may need two work zones or one longer surface with separate storage.
Coordination

Power, data and heat.

The most common office millwork problem is equipment that was not planned for. A closed cabinet with a printer, a computer and a network switch inside it gets warm, and cables pushed through a back panel after installation look improvised. Resolving these points in the drawings costs much less than fixing them on site.

Cable paths

Decide where cables drop through the work surface, how they travel behind the desk and where they reach the outlets. Grommets, cable trays and removable back panels are drawn in, not drilled later.

Outlet locations

Outlets often end up behind a new cabinet or at the wrong height. Coordinate outlet and data locations with the electrician and the cabinet elevations together, while the wall is still open or the drawings can still change.

Ventilation

Equipment cabinets need an air path in and out, and the equipment manufacturer’s clearance guidance should be confirmed. Ventilated panels or open sections can keep the look calm while letting heat escape.

Lighting

Task lighting under shelves or above the desk reduces glare on screens when it is placed carefully. If lighting is part of the scope, its power supply and switch are located in the drawings.

Completed by Millwork USA

Desks, office storage and library walls we have built.

In the Berkeley Residence, a home with walnut-toned cabinetry, we built a built-in desk with drawers and full-height storage. In the Encino Residence in Los Angeles, we built office storage with full-height doors and drawer banks, and a floor-to-ceiling shelving wall with integrated lower storage. These photographs are completed Millwork USA work; your office will be drawn for your own room and equipment.

A library wall looks simple, but books are heavy. Shelf span, thickness and support determine whether shelves stay straight under load, so longer spans need either thicker shelves, intermediate supports or fixed shelves that also stiffen the case. Adjustable shelves are flexible but rely on their supports; a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves is common. Closed lower storage below open shelving keeps clutter out of sight and gives the wall a solid base.

Older homes

Working with older San Francisco walls and floors.

Many San Francisco and Bay Area homes were built long before anyone planned for a home office. Their walls and floors rarely meet at right angles, and built-ins have to be drawn to absorb that. These are the conditions that matter most.

  • Walls that are out of plumb or wavy, which are handled with scribed edges and fillers rather than by forcing a straight cabinet against them.
  • Floors that slope, which affect the base and the level of the desk top across a long run.
  • Baseboards, window casings, picture rails and crown moulding, which have to be removed, returned or met cleanly by the new cabinetry.
  • Radiators, heating registers and vents in the wall the cabinetry is meant to cover.
  • Fixing tall units securely to the structure, which is especially relevant in California, and the backing required for it.
  • Delivery access: narrow stairs and tight turns can limit the size of each piece and the number of site joints.
Related rooms

Office, study or home gym: the same wall, different requirements.

In current proposals, Millwork USA designs office and home-gym built-ins, sometimes in the same house. They share construction methods but not requirements.

Home office

Driven by equipment, cables and screen position. Drawers and closed storage keep the desk clear, and the elevation behind the chair is treated as a background for calls.

Study or library

Driven by shelf load, proportion and light. Shelving is spaced for the books and objects you own, and lower cabinets give the wall weight.

Home gym

Open shelving keeps towels, mats and weights visible and ventilated. Surfaces need to tolerate handling, and heavy equipment calls for shelf supports chosen for the load.

Proposal structure

Material options you can price separately.

Our proposals list a base scope room by room and add separately priced options. For office and study cabinetry, walnut-veneer backs behind open shelving and a solid walnut work surface are offered as options. They can be selected or declined without changing the base scope.

Each line of the proposal shows materials, fabrication and labor, installation, lighting and accessories separately. That makes it clear which choices move the cost: the visible material, the number of drawers and doors, solid wood against veneer, lighting and the amount of site fitting an older room requires.

Buyer questions

Frequently asked questions.

How deep should a built-in desk be?

Desk depth follows the screens and how far you sit from them. Large or multiple monitors need more depth than a laptop, and monitor arms can recover surface space. We confirm the depth against your equipment and chair in the drawings rather than using a fixed number.

Can built-in office cabinetry hide a printer and router?

Yes, if the cabinet is planned with power, cable access and ventilation. Closed cabinets with electronics inside need an air path, and the equipment maker’s clearance guidance should be checked. We draw ventilated panels or open sections where the equipment sits.

Will library shelves sag under books?

Shelves sag when the span is too long for the shelf thickness and the load. Long runs need thicker shelves, intermediate supports or fixed shelves. We set spans for the load you describe, so tell us whether the shelves will hold books, files or display objects.

Can you fit built-ins to the uneven walls of an older San Francisco home?

Yes. Out-of-plumb walls and sloping floors are handled with scribed edges, fillers and a level base rather than by forcing the cabinetry flat against the wall. Site measurements confirm the conditions before the affected pieces are released for fabrication.

Is solid walnut an option for the desk top?

Yes. In our proposals, a solid walnut work surface and walnut-veneer backs for open shelving are offered as separately priced options. You can choose them or keep the base material without changing the rest of the scope.
